His close proximity to Jesus taught him much about love. He was exiled to the island of Patmos under Domitian, but after his death, John was allowed to return to Ephesus where he governed churches in Asia until his death at about A. And Jesus said to him, Follow Me. What do we know about Philip? Almost nothing. Although a Jew, we only know him by his Greek name, Philip. A heart for evangelism, he was anxious to tell Nathanael the One foretold by Moses and the prophets had been found.
John They were close companions and possibly studied the Old Testament together. Philip was stoned and crucified in Hierapolis, Phrygia.
Also known as Bartholomew, Nathanael came from Cana in Galilee. John He expressed some local prejudice about Nazareth. Nathanael may have preached in India and translated the book of Matthew into their language. He was beaten, crucified, and beheaded. He died as a martyr while serving the people of Albinopolis, Armenia. Levi, the Son of Alphaeus, Matthew was a tax collector--the most despised people in all of Israel.
They were known for taking extra money from the people of Israel to pay off the Romans and to pad their own pockets. Then it happened that as Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him.
And hearing this, Jesus said to them, It is not those who are healthy that need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous , but sinners.
And he got up and followed Him. Matthew Matthew brought the gospel to Ethiopia and Egypt. Hircanus the king had him killed with a spear. He was an outspoken skeptic to the point of being known as a pessimist. No details are given about Thomas in the first three Gospels other than the mention of his name. Lazarus had died and the disciples feared for the life of Jesus and themselves if they were to go back to Bethany. Thomas speaks up. His devotion to Christ is further displayed when Jesus told the disciples that He was going to go away and prepare a place for them.
Thomas said to Him, Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way? Tradition strongly suggests that Thomas started the Christian church in India. Some suggest being run through by a spear killed him, ironically, similar to Jesus being pierced by a spear.
He is the son of Alphaeus Luke Except for a few details about his family, there is nothing more mentioned about him in Scripture. Maybe this is why he is referred to as James the Less in Mark What is important to remember is although James was somewhat in the background, he was chosen by Jesus to be one of the twelve disciples.
He was trained and used by Christ in a powerful way to further the Kingdom of God. He was a valuable team member. Simon was probably a political activist in his younger years.
Why would Jesus choose someone with this background? But he was a man of fierce loyalties, amazing passion, courage, and zeal. Simon had believed the truth and embraced Christ as his Lord. Andrew served as a disciple of John the Baptist and lived as a fisherman. Andrew left his life as a fisherman to serve as one of the two disciples of John the Baptist. Andrew is most noted for being the first Apostle called by Christ and spent his life spreading the word of Jesus Christ. James son of Zebedee, older brother of John : James also referred to as Saint James by the Catholic church is known for being the son of Zebedee and the brother of John, he hailed from Galilee.
They were easily angered and quick to judge enemies of the Lord. James was one of the three disciples closest to Jesus and as a result, he witnessed many magnificent events that the other nine disciples were not allowed to see.
John also referred to as Saint John by the Catholic church the apostle is sometimes confused with John the Baptist when these men were two very different figured in Biblical history. John the Apostle was the younger brother of James and also a fisherman. John is known for writing five books of The Bible. John, like Andrew, served as the second disciple to John the Baptist. John served as the third disciple to be included in the circle of three disciples closest to Christ and as such he was witness to many miracles of Christ that the other nine disciples were not allowed to see.
John was particularly devoted to Jesus and is claimed to be the closest of all twelve disciples to Jesus, never straying far from him. John is often found in the accompaniment of Peter in The Bible and it was Peter and John who discovered the empty tomb of Jesus after his resurrection. John was the last of the twelve disciples to die and the only disciple who did not die in martyrdom; he is believed to have died from old age after being exiled to Patmos.
Phillip also referred to as Saint Phillip by the Catholic church was born in Bethsaida like Peter and Andrew and is often referred to as Phillip the Apostle in order to distinguish him from the Phillip that occurs in Acts. Phillip was slow to recognize Jesus; however, once he found Jesus he was quick to share His greatness with his friend Nathanael Bartholomew.
Both Phillip and Bartholomew are frequently named together as they frequently appear together and speak together in The Bible. Phillip is not mentioned a great deal throughout The Bible and not too much is known about him in-depth. Bartholomew Nathanael Bartholomew : Bartholomew also referred to as Saint Bartholomew by the Catholic church was a friend of Phillip and brought to see the greatness of Christ by Phillip.
Both Bartholomew and Phillip are often seen together and as a result, they are generally lumped together when spoken of in any detail. Much as with Phillip, Bartholomew is not referred to in detail in The Bible and so not too much is known about him. While his death is not talked of in The Bible it is believed that Bartholomew too received the death of a martyr as a result of his firm belief in Christianity and his intent on spreading the word of Christ.
Thomas also referred to as Saint Thomas by the Catholic church is thought to have been a twin although there is no mention of his twin in The Bible. Thomas is also characterized by being somewhat gloomy and easily discouraged. While he was much of a pessimist Thomas was a full believer in Christ and followed Him loyally throughout His life.
Thomas is known for being unable to see the forest for the trees and Jesus often had to help him to see the whole forest. Thomas is the one disciple who was not present on the first Easter Sunday. Thomas was the disciple who refused to believe in resurrection but he went on to spread the word of Christ until his death. It is believed that Thomas died the death of a martyr but this cannot be verified.
Matthew also referred to as Saint Matthew by the Catholic church is known for being a publican or tax collector which is unusual in that most of the disciples were fishermen by trade.
Due to his work as a tax collector, Matthew was seen as filth among people, classified as the lowest of the low for working alongside the Romans in collecting taxes, and at the time being under Roman rule was the most hated thing of all. In addition during this time many tax collectors were dishonest giving people even more reason to hate them. Matthew always refers to himself as Matthew the tax collector or Matthew the publican making note of the fact that he was once a sinner even though he followed the path of Christ.
Matthew was particularly self-absorbed at the time he was called by Jesus to serve as His disciple. Upon meeting Christ; however, Matthew forgot about being self-centered and began to consider others. Matthew is recognized for being the first writer of the first Gospel which is now referred to as the Gospel of Matthew. James son of Alphaeus also known as Saint James the Less by the Catholic church is one of the disciples that very little is known about. In about 44 A.
Not much is known of Peter from this time. It is thought that he labored in Rome about the time that Paul was imprisoned there in 66 A. With the church coming to be centered more and more around Ephesus in the middle of the first century, it is probable that he spent time there and in the other churches of Asia Minor to whom his epistles are addressed.
According to tradition, Peter fled from Rome in about 67 A. As he was journeying away from the city on the Appian Way, he had a vision of Jesus. Jesus replied that he was going to Jerusalem to be crucified again. This reply made Peter ashamed that he had not stood his ground for the Gospel and he returned to Rome where he was arrested and executed. At his request, he was crucified head downward, deeming himself unworthy to die as Jesus had.
As fishermen, they worked in partnership with the brothers James and John Lk , also destined to be apostles. Andrew had been a disciple of John the Baptist before he met Jesus. Initially, Andrew continued to make his living at fishing. He did not follow Jesus full-time until later on, when Jesus called him, along with Peter, James and John, one day when they were busy fishing.
Later on, he brought the request for an interview from some Greeks who wished to see Jesus, but Jesus would not see them because he knew the time of his crucifixion was close. Finally, Andrew is seen praying with the Twelve in Jerusalem after the Ascension.
The New Testament tells us no more about him. The family was apparently quite affluent. It was possible to make a good profit by salting the fish and transporting it to inland towns, and this is probably where their wealth came from. Certain passages in the Bible have raised the possibility that James and John might have been cousins of Jesus, but this cannot be verified. James was called to full-time ministry together with John, and immediately following fellow fishermen Peter and Andrew.
This is often thought of as an arrogant and selfish request, and the other disciples were indignant when they heard it, but their motivation might have been sincere. James was the first of the apostles to be martyred, and the only one whose death is mentioned in the New Testament. His death is recorded in Acts, and took place in 41 A. Jesus] saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets.
On the face of it, being a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee sounds like a fairly humble occupation. Furthermore, he was personally acquainted with the most important man in Judaism: the high priest. It is thought that John remained in Jerusalem for some years after Jesus' death and resurrection, before eventually moving to Ephesus, which in the second half of the first century came to be a major center of Christianity. Some time around 90 A.
John will already have been an old man by this time, probably in his eighties or nineties. He was one of the earliest disciples, for he received his calling from Jesus the day after they did. He was also responsible for introducing another of the apostles, Bartholomew, to Jesus. Again, he is shown in discourse with Jesus shortly before the crucifixion.
According to tradition, he died in Hierapolis in the Roman province of Asia today in western Turkey after spending his life in Christian ministry. He is said to have had two daughters who remained celibate throughout their lives, in order that they too might give themselves completely to a life of service. Bartholomew and Nathanael have been accepted throughout church history as one and the same.
