Why does kmno4 need to be filtered

It dissolves in water to give deep purple solutions, evaporation of which gives prismatic purplish-black glistening crystals. Manganese greensand is another common treatment method for removing sulfur from drinking water. It is usually recommended for water that contains less than 6. A manganese greensand filter has a special coating that oxidizes hydrogen sulfide gas to solid sulfur particles, which are filtered. When all of the manganese oxide is consumed, the greensand is regenerated with potassium permanganate.

Potassium permanganate is a purple oxidizing chemical that is added to the untreated water to maintain the manganese greensand filter. To work properly, the greensand must be regenerated at periodic intervals based on water usage and contaminant concentration. Followers 0. Recommended Posts. Generally one standardizes the KMnO4 solution to be used as the titrant immediately before using it in the titration. It must be re-standardized every day or so.

First Name. Your Response. It requires My question is this: 1. When my KMnO4 solution is properly filtered, should i expect the glass filter to wash up to pure white with just water?

Since sulphuric acid cleans the filter better than just water I am guessing i still have contamination getting caught by the filter, hence indicating that further filtering of KMnO4 solution is needed. BUT since Oxalic acid cleans the filter better than sulphuric, i am left to wonder if the "remaining dirt" is just KMnO4 which is getting reduced by oxalic acid rather than impurities. Which brings me to the first question about being able to clean filter with just DI water if the solution being filtered is "clean".
